How to Remove Wrinkles from a Stretched Canvas Using Water and Heat
Wrinkles, dents, and minor distortions on the surface of a stretched canvas are a common occurrence, especially after transportation, storage, or changes in environmental conditions. One of the most widely used and simplest methods to address this issue is applying water to the back of the canvas to relax the fibers. When done correctly, this method can significantly improve surface tension without requiring re-stretching.
Why Water Works on Canvas
Canvas is made of natural fibers that expand when moistened and contract as they dry. A light spray of water on the back of a stretched canvas allows the fibers to relax and then tighten evenly as the moisture evaporates. This method is effective for minor wrinkles and dents.
Proper Application: Less Is More
An important point is to avoid excessive moisture.
Best Practices:
Use a spray bottle that produces a very fine mist
Apply water only to the affected area
Avoid dripping or pooling of water
Allow the canvas to dry naturally in a horizontal position
