Theofilos Hatzimihail (c. 1870-1934) was a self-taught Greek folk painter, celebrated for his distinctive, naive style. His art blends Byzantine iconography with secular themes, often depicting historical events, mythological scenes, and everyday Greek life. Posthumous recognition came through critics like Stratis Eleftheriadis (Tériade).
This painting by Theofilos illustrates a dramatic scene from Greek mythology, where Phrixus and Helle, children of King Athamas and Nephele, are rescued by a golden-fleeced ram. As they fly over the sea, Helle falls and drowns, lending her name to the Hellespont. Theofilos captures the myth with vibrant colors and narrative power, characteristic of his unique art.
High-resolution reproduction on canvas, preserving the authenticity of colors and the intricate details of the original artwork.
An ideal choice to infuse your space with a touch of Greek history and folk art.
